Ottawa's government, in a move it says will save the province money, has moved to cap the wages of contract faculty at public colleges and universities The Ottawa Citizen reports.
The legislation would remove unions' ability to negotiate the wages of some of the lowest paid members of university and college faculties. Contract faculty teach half of the courses at Ottawa universities.
The government has already announced its grant funding for the universities for the next three years, leaving many to wonder how such a move would save the province any money when contract faculty are not provincial employees but employees of the universities at which they teach.
Unions are pushing back against the legislation and are planning to challenge it in court should it pass.
