WGBH: Dedham, MA teachers go on strike

Public school teachers in Dedham, MA went on strike last Friday after nearly two years of negotiations have failed to provide a new contract for teachers in the school district, Boston NPR affiliate WGBH reports.

Striking workers include the districts teachers, nurses, and counselors.

WGBH reports that a near majority of the unions 270 members voted to authorize the strike. Negotiations have reportedly stalled over health insurance, compensation, and language to safe guard staff from sexual harassment.

It is illegal for teachers to strike in Massachusetts and the district has filed a petition with the Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations. Representatives from the Dedham Educators Association say that they anticipate a fine for the unions decision to strike, but chose to go ahead with the work stoppage because it was what was right for their members.
