DANIEL BOONE REGIONAL LIBRARY: FIRST IN MISSOURI TO UNIONIZE LIBRARIANS

 COLUMBIA, Mo. —

Union organizers are gaining ground in Missouri. For the first time in recent history, library workers have elected to form a bargaining unit.

The vote was announced Monday in Columbia, Missouri.

Daniel Boone Regional Library is now the first in Missouri to unionize. Librarians want to negotiate pay increases, better health care coverage, and improved worker conditions. Demands for improved working conditions specifically target security and COVID-19.

“It's wonderful to be on the leading edge of this," Librarian Mary Kate Protzman said.

Protzman is one of 101 librarians who voted for the union. 55 employee voters were against the unionization effort. The workers will join the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees.

“We want a voice at the table. We want a voice in making decisions that impact us as workers,” Protzman said.
