U.S. News and World Report writes that the Clark County (NV) School District which oversees schools in the Las Vegas area has gone to court to prevent a September 10th walkout by teachers.
Teacher strikes are illegal under Nevada law, and if a judge sides with the school district the union could face fines of up to $50,000/day and striking teachers could be disciplined or fired if they carry through with a walkout.
The union, which has agreed to mediation, says that it would much rather settle disputes at the negotiating table, but is willing to challenge the constitutionality of Nevada's anti-strike law all the way to the state supreme court if necessary.
It appears that the main sticking point in negotiations hinges on the issue of column advancement whereby teachers may receive more pay for additional training.
