Sentinel: Bookshop Santa Cruz employees unionize

 The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that employees of Bookstore Santa Cruz voted 58% in favor of unionizing with the Communication Workers of America Local 9423.

Impetus for the organizing drive came this past year when workers were asked to return to work without health and safety measures in place and without a workers voice in pandemic planning. Workers also are pushing for higher wages.

Verge: Google workers announce international union alliance

Google workers represented by 13 unions in 10 countries have announced the formation of a cross border union alliance, Alpha Global, with the stated goal of holding Google parent company Alphabet accountable, the Verge is reporting.

The announcement comes just weeks after United States and Canada based workers formed the Alphabet Workers Union (AWU), a minority union within the Communication Workers of America, and grew in membership from 350-700.

Alpha Global will be affiliated with UNI Global Union, putting it in an international federation of 20 million union workers including workers at Amazon.

Lens: CWA threatens to move August 2021 convention over convention center's lack of support for workers

The Communication Workers of America (CWA) have told the Convention Center in New Orleans it will be moving it's 2021 convention if the center does not provide $100million in funding for out of work hospitality workers, according to reports from New Orleans based The Lens.

The CWA says it considers a labor conflict the fact that the Convention Center has yet to address the demands of the Coalition to Create a Fair Fund for Hospitality Workers, a New Orleans based coalition of 35 organizations.
