Dayton Public Schools (Ohio) Preparing for Strike

Dayton Public Schools will be open for the Aug. 15 start of school, regardless of whether teachers are on strike, Superintendent Rhonda Corr said.

Unfair Labor Charge Filed Against Washington-Centerville Public Library

The union representing workers at Washington-Centerville Public Library has filed an unfair labor charge with the State Employment Relations Board in response to what union members have characterized as "punishment" for employees taking sick and family leave.

Library administration is set to begin bargaining sessions with the Washington-Centerville Public Library Staff Association this week. The union formed six years ago but has yet to negotiate their first contract.

Information Picket at Washington-Centerville Public Library

Library workers at Washington-Centerville Public Library organized an information picket earlier this week in order to inform the public about their concerns with the library administration's "stall tactics". Six years ago, the workers voted to form the Washington Centerville Public Library Staff Association but have yet to negotiate a contract.

New Contract for Library Workers in Mahoning County

Librarians and library assistants at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County have a new four year contract that includes bonuses and wage increases. Other library employees, including clerical and maintenance staff, are represented by a separate bargaining unit and are still in negotiations with the library administration.

Owens Community College Faculty Association Takes Pay Cut

Library workers, child care workers, counselors, and other faculty at Owens Community College in Ohio have agreed to a new collective agreement that includes salary cuts and the elimination of overload and summer pay. The college is under a fiscal watch after enrollment has declined significantly, and members of the faculty association have agreed to the reduction in compensation "in order to continue to provide this important education to students in our community", according to the faculty association president.

New Collective Agreement for Stark County District Library Workers

Employees at Stark County District Library in Canton, Ohio have a new collective agreement that includes increased pay rates. Library employees are represented by Service Employees International Union District 1199.

Toledo-Lucas County Public Library Wins John Sessions Memorial Award

This year's John Sessions Memorial Award was given to the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library's Local History & Genealogy Department "for its extensive efforts in building an ongoing legacy recognizing the labor community". This award is given by the Reference and User Services Association of ALA to "a library or library system which has made a significant effort to work with the labor community and by doing so has brought recognition to the history and contribution of the labor movement to the development of the United States". New Contract for Public Library of Youngstown Workers

Librarians and library assistants at the Public Library of Youngstown have a new two and a half-year contract with the county that includes wage increases and the elimination of step increases.

Art Exhibit at Cleveland Public Library

The Cleveland Public Library is currently hosting the Labor and New Deal Art Print Exhibit, which will feature talks and performances in addition to artwork. The exhibition is in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of The Little Steel Strike.

Dayton Metro Library Board Rejects Third Party Recommendations

The Dayton Metro Library Board of Trustees is reopening negotiations with the Dayton Metro Library Staff Association after rejecting the recommendations of a neutral third-party fact finder. The rejected recommendations include those related to pay raises and health insurance premiums.

Ohio library strike possible

Ohio Association of Public School Employees Local 026 has announced it is exploring strike options after the Guernsey County District Public Library provided notice of its intent to implement its final offer in the wake of an impasse in negotiations.  This is just preliminary as a strike vote hasn't even gone to the membership yet, so we'll see how this progresses soon.

Ohio librarians ratify contract
