Chronicle: Elyria Library and union reach contract agreement

The Chronicle-Telegram reports that the Elyria Library has reached a contract agreement with its union, the Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 17, after several COVID-19 delays.

The new contract, which includes a 1% pay increase replaces a contract which expired in April 2020. Employees will, however, also be moving to a 37.5 hour work week, down from 40 in the previous contract. A one time payment was also agreed to to make up for the gap between contracts.

The Library board also passed the same increase for non-union employees as well.

UAW Research Library Closed

In disheartening news, the United Auto Workers have shut down their own Research Library and its unionized staff (represented by OPEIU) have either been re-assigned or laid-off.  This is a double blow to the profession as it represents the loss of an imporant research resource and it directly relates to the union movement in its subject and governance.
